Systems Engineer

Apperian is looking for a highly motivated Systems Engineer to support and evolve its growing infrastructure, including Apperian’s production environment, QA/Dev environments, and office network.

Position responsibilities will include:

      • Day-to-day operation and maintenance of Apperian’s various hosted software products, including EASE.
      • Designing, configuring and operating application monitoring systems (e.g. Cloudkick, NewRelic, Nagios) to improve situational awareness and responsiveness to detected error conditions.
      • Designing, building and managing virtual machine templates to improve and standardize deployment of systems into Apperian’s various hosted environments.
      • Working with product development teams to create custom monitoring and reporting scripts.
      • Selecting, building, deploying, and operating software distribution mechanisms to standardize the software update process.
      • Contributing the architecture and build-out of the production environment to address scale and fail-over requirements.
      • Implementing robust backup and DR processes to protect production databases and fileserver content.
      • On-call participation.

Qualifications:

      • Self-motivated and the ability to accomplish tasks with minimal guidance.
      • Attention to detail.
      • Strong diagnostic and problem solving skills.
      • Comfortable working in a small, fast-paced environment.
      • Strong communications skills.
      • 3+ years experience installing, configuring, and administering enterprise-grade Linux deployments.
      • Experience operating and administering LAMP deployments.
      • Experience implementing and managing open source monitoring tools.
      • Experience with open source databases (e.g. Postgres, MySQL).
      • Strong scripting skills (bash, PERL, Python, PHP).

Useful skills and experience:

      • Experience with Cloud hosting providers or virtualization technologies (e.g. Amazon Web Services, Rackspace Cloud, VMWare).
      • Experience with Debian Linux.
      • Experience with core network technologies (e.g. DNS, BGP, SSL).
      • Experience with Redis or Node.js.

Software Engineer – Applications

Required Skills and Experience:

      • 3+ years software development
      • 1+ years developing complex mobile apps, preferably on Android or iOS
      • 1+ years developing Javascript or web app client software
      • 1+ years developing web and/or web services software
      • Proficiency in PHP, Python, Ruby or equivalent languages
      • Knowledge of SQL query authoring and optimization
      • Familiarity with NoSQL database management environments
      • Familiarity with JSON, REST, web services
      • Proven ability to work interactively and cooperatively within development teams
      • BS in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline

Software QA Engineer

Position responsibilities will include:

Work on all aspects of application development for mobile environments, including client and server mobile software, web services, and data access software. Work with a team to create and optimize test frameworks and plans creating innovative solutions in a very fast, dynamic, and fun environment.

Required Skills and Experience:

      • 3+ years QA experience
      • 1+ years testing mobile apps, preferably on Android or iOS
      • Proven ability to create and execute testcases and test plans
      • Solid understanding of development and test process
      • Knowledge of SQL
      • Proven ability to work interactively and cooperatively with development and support teams
      • BS in Computer Science or a related engineering discipline

Useful skills and experience:

      • Familiarity with automated test frameworks such as XLT, Selenium and JMeter
      • Experience in testing highly scalable applications
      • Experience working in Agile environment
      • Experience with Software as a Service (SaaS) products
      • Excellent oral and written communication and troubleshooting skills
